Club America is on the verge of lifting the Liga MX Apertura title thanks to Alex Zendejas’ impressive first leg performance.

Zendejas assisted on Club America’s opening goal against Monterrey before delivering the winning goal in a 2-1 first leg victory over Monterrey. The U.S. men’s national team winger earned Man of the Match honors after continuing his latest impressive season for the Mexican club.

Sergio Canales propelled Monterrey in front 1-0 after 35 minutes but Zendejas’ assist to Kevin Alvarez four minutes later helped the hosts tie things up before halftime.

Zendejas called his own number in the 49th minute, boosting Club America in front 2-1. It marked the 26-year-old’s fourth goal in 18 league appearances this season.

Club America would hang on for a crucial first leg win, giving them the edge heading into Sunday’s second leg in Monterey.

Fellow USMNT forward Brandon Vazquez played 24 minutes off of the bench for Monterrey.
