Americans Abroad Player of the Week: Johnny Cardoso

03/31/2025 09:00 AM
Johnny Cardoso delivered one of his better performances in a Real Betis shirt on Sunday.
Cardoso scored a sensational goal in Real Betis’ 2-1 win over Sevilla. The 23-year-old’s impactful performance earned him Americans Abroad Player of the Week honors.
After not featuring for the U.S. men’s national team, Cardoso stayed in Spain to rest and recover. The rest certainly looked like it paid off as Cardoso’s right-footed missile helped Manuel Pellegrini’s squad tie things up against Sevilla in the first half.
Cucho Hernandez delivered the eventual winning goal for Real Betis before halftime.
Not only did Cardoso deliver his third goal of the season, he also won five duels and completed 89% of his passes. The 23-year-old walked away as one of the top performers in the match, continuing what has been a strong second season in Spain.
Real Betis next prepares for a trip to Barcelona on April 5.
Here is a look at some of the other top Americans Abroad performers from this past week:
Brenden Aaronson
Brenden Aaronson returned to club action on Saturday and walked away with his ninth goal of the season.
Aaronson needed one minute to open the scoring from Elland Road as Leeds United earned a 2-2 home draw with Swansea City. The USMNT midfielder entered the March international window on a poor run of form but has responded nicely since then.
Caleb Wiley
It was a positive first start for Caleb Wiley at Vicarage Road.
Wiley logged 90 minutes in Watford’s goal-less draw with Plymouth Argyle on Saturday. The Chelsea loanee completed 90% of his passes while also winning five duels defensively.
His loan spell only has about six weeks left but a healthy and fit Wiley could be a plus for the USMNT’s summer schedule.
Josh Sargent
Josh Sargent continues to find the back of the net for Norwich City.
Sargent scored his 13th goal of the season as Norwich City defeated West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in EFL Championship action. The USMNT forward may not have found the back of the net on international duty, but he’s picked up where he left off at club level.
Weston McKennie
Juventus earned a crucial three points in Serie A play on Saturday, with Weston McKennie excelling in the starting lineup.
McKennie logged a strong 90 minutes in a 1-0 home triumph over Genoa. The 26-year-old won seven duels, completed 84% of his passes, and made four defensive recoveries.
New Juventus manager Igor Tudor should be pleased with what he saw from McKennie.
What did you think of these individual performances this past week? Was there anyone left off the list that you would’ve added?
