Chris Richards, Crystal Palace suffer EFL Cup elimination

Chris Richards started in the second-consecutive round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, but the American defender won’t be extending that streak later this fall.

Richards started and logged 90 minutes for Crystal Palace, but the Eagles suffered elimination after falling 3-0 at Manchester United. The U.S. men’s national team centerback started alongside Rob Holding in his second-ever appearance at Old Trafford.

Alejandro Garnacho’s opening goal in the 21st minute gave the Red Devils an early advantage before Casemiro doubled their lead just six minutes later.

Anthony Martial slotted home Manchester United’s third goal of the night in the 55th minute, with Casemiro setting up the Frenchman. Andre Onana was only troubled twice in the home clean sheet.

Richards won one duel, made two interceptions, and two recoveries, but overall the entire Crystal Palace backline struggled in the match.

The 23-year-old is likely to return to the bench this weekend with the Eagles facing the Red Devils in Premier League play on Saturday. Richards has only appeared in one league match this season.
