The LA Galaxy's 2024 MLS Cup triumph will be remembered for its standout performances, but none shone brighter than that of Gastón Brugman.
The Uruguayan midfielder, once an overlooked figure in the squad, rose to the occasion in the postseason and was awarded the 2024 MLS MVP, capping off a remarkable comeback. Brugman's impact was undeniable in the Galaxy's 2-1 MLS Cup Final win over the New York Red Bulls.
Stepping in for the injured Riqui Puig—a key playmaker sidelined with an ACL tear sustained in the Western Conference Final—Brugman orchestrated the midfield with poise, vision, and leadership. His perfectly timed, line-splitting pass to Joseph Paintsil set up the Galaxy's opening goal in the ninth minute, a moment emblematic of his influence throughout the match.
Despite starting only 12 regular-season games due to injuries, missing time for paperwork and stiff competition for midfield spots, Brugman's return to form came at the perfect time. In the wake of Puig's absence, the Uruguayan not only filled the void but thrived under the pressure.
"I was going through a tough moment personally when I came back from Uruguay after getting my green card," Brugman shared after being named MVP. "The accomplishment of MVP gives me a push of what's more to come."
Brugman also reflected on his journey to Los Angeles and the fulfillment of his aspirations: "When I arrived here, I knew we were going to win. It was achieved after two years."
The Galaxy's championship run had plenty of memorable moments, including Puig's incredible perseverance in the Western Conference Final, where he played for 30 minutes after tearing his ACL, delivering the game-winning assist to Dejan Joveljić. However, it was Brugman who stepped up when it mattered most, earning recognition as the MLS Cup Final best player.
Uruguayan teammate Martín Cáceres expressed pride in his compatriot: "He still doesn't even believe he's won the award, but seriously, I'm very happy for Gastón to win the MVP."
Brugman's performance not only helped the Galaxy secure their record sixth MLS Cup but also re-established his reputation around the league.
