One of the greatest soccer players of all-time has now added an MLS MVP award to his trophy cabinet.
Lionel Messi was named MVP on Friday, becoming the first Inter Miami player to earn the honor. Messi helped the Herons lift their first-ever Supporters' Shield title and also break the MLS single-season points record (74).
Messi earned a combined 38.4% of the vote, while Columbus Crew attacker Cucho Hernandez finished second (33.70%) and Portland Timbers star Evander placed third (9.24%). DC United’s Christian Benteke and Messi’s Inter Miami teammate Luis Suarez finished fifth.
The Argentine star led MLS with 36 goal contributions (20 goals, 16 assists), which is ranked as fifth-highest single-season total in league history. He only featured in 19 matches due Copa America involvement and injuries throughout the season.
The Herons registered an astonishing 12-1-6 regular season record in MLS matches that Messi started in.
Messi’s arrival in Miami has certainly helped the club get on track, lifting trophies in each of the last two seasons (2023 Leagues Cup, 2024 Supporters’ Shield).
Inter Miami will now prepare for a busy 2025 schedule under new head coach Javier Mascherano. The Herons will feature in the revamped FIFA Club World Cup.
