USMNT U-20’s open Revelations Cup with victory over Peru

The U.S. Under-20 men’s national team took the field for the first time since winning the Concacaf U-20 Championship earlier this summer, capturing an opening day win at the 2022 Revelations Cup in Mexico. Brian Gutierrez, Brandan Craig, and Diego Luna all scored for the USMNT U-20’s in a 3-1 win over Peru. Mauricio Cuevas and Quinn Sullivan registered assists as the Americans overcame a rough opening 40 minutes to capture their first victory of the tournament. Brandan Craig helped keep the USMNT U-20’s foot on the gas in the 68th minute, rifling a right-footed free kick off the left post and in. The USMNT U-20’s victory was sealed in the 84th minute as Sullivan played Luna into the Peru box, watching as the Real Salt Lake forward chipped his shot into the center of the goal. Several players from the title-winning team this summer started the match including Philadelphia Union midfielder Jack McGlynn, D.C. United forward Jackson Hopkins, and Hajduk Split midfielder Rokas Pukstas. Real Sociedad left back Jonathan Gomez, Hoffenheim defender Justin Che, and Fulham goalkeeper Alex Porto also got the nod in Varas’ starting lineup. The USMNT U-20’s will next face hosts Mexico on Saturday before closing out its schedule against Paraguay on Sept. 27. It was a perfect day overall for U.S. Youth National Teams as the USMNT U-19 squad also claimed a victory in friendly action, downing Malta 5-0. Rodrigo Neri, Reed Baker-Whiting, Esmir Bajraktarevic, and Alex Freeman all scored goals for Marko Miskovic’s squad.
