Vancouver Whitecaps 0-1 Calvary FC (aggregate:  2-2, Vancouver advance on away goals)

VANCOUVER, BC–Vancouver Whitecaps advanced to the semifinals of the Canadian Championship despite losing to Calvary FC of the Canadian Premier League (CPL) and of Calgary, 1-0. The Whitecaps advanced on away goals after their 2-1 win on May 7th at the Foothills Stadium.

The game’s only goal came in the 32nd minute after William Akio’s cross was accidentally deflected into the net by Ranko Veselinovic and past goalkeeper Issac Boehmer. In the second half, the Whitecaps did more pressing for an equalizer than Calvary a winner in the tie. One chance Calvary did have came in the 77th minute as Jesse Daley  had a great chance in the box, but was denied by Boehmer.

The Whitecaps join Toronto FC in the semifinals as the latter dismissed CS Saint-Laurent of League 1 Canada, 8-1, on Tuesday night and 11-1 on aggregate. CF Montreal host Forge FC of the CPL on Wednesday after the sides played to a 1-1 draw in Hamilton a fortnight ago. In an all-CPL tie, Pacific FC host Atletico Ottawa in Langford, BC on May 29th after the sides played to a 0-0 draw in Ottawa.

As for league play, the Whitecaps will look to end their five-match winless streak when they host Inter Miami. Kickoff is at 7:30pm PT on Apple TV.
