Earlier this summer, the Copa America 3rd/4th place play-off was marred by ugly scenes that happened after the full time whistle. A number of Uruguay players clashed with Colombia supporters inside the stadium, located near their families.
Barcelona's Ronald Araujo, who missed the match after injuring his hamstring the week prior, and Jose Maria Gimenez of Atletico Madrid were both involved in the mayhem. They, alongside several others, have now been punished by CONMEBOL, South American football's governing body.
As per Diario AS, Araujo and Gimenez will both be banned for Uruguay's next three international matches. On top of this, they have also been fined $12,000. The harshest punishment went to Liverpool's Darwin Nunez, who was handed a five-match suspension.
Both players would be able to return for Uruguay's 2026 World Cup qualifier against Ecuador in October. Gimenez will surely play, although Araujo will not – he's not expected to return until November/December as he continues his recovery from the aforementioned hamstring injury.
