David de Gea future could be resolved next week, La Liga return unlikely to happen

Last weekend, David de Gea dropped a cryptic clue about his future. The 33-year-old, who has been a free agent since he left Manchester United last July, tweeted an hourglass emoji, hinting that there would be news soon.

And news there will be. That's according to The Athletic, who have reported that de Gea's situation will have more clarity from next week onwards. The 45-time capped Spain international considered retirement during his year away from football, but he's now hungrier than ever to make his return.

De Gea currently has three offers on the table: one from Saudi Arabia, one from the MLS, and one from a club in the Serie A. He's not been contacted by any representatives from any La Liga clubs, so it appears unlikely that he will be returning to La Liga since leaving Atletico Madrid 13 years ago.

It will be interesting to see where de Gea ends up, and it is in Europe, he could be eyeing up a return to the Spanish national team. However, he'd have to go a long way to break apart the established trio of Unai Simon, David Raya and Alex Remiro, who were in this summer's Euro 2024-winning squad.
