Uruguay beats Canada in shootout to finish 3rd at Copa America

Uruguay clinched third place at the Copa America by defeating Canada on Saturday, scoring a stoppage-time equalizer to force penalties and then keeping its cool to claim a 4-3 win in the shootout.

Canada captain Alphonso Davies' spot-kick, a Panenka attempt that hit the crossbar and bounced out, sealed the victory for Uruguay.

The match finished 2-2 after 90 intense minutes.

Rodrigo Bentancur opened the scoring in the eighth minute, but Ismael Kone equalized with an acrobatic effort in the 22nd minute. The Marseille midfielder, the game's standout player, then created his team's second goal, driving forward and taking a wicked shot that led to a rebound for substitute Jonathan David to convert.

That looked like it would be the winner, especially after Dayne St. Clair made a late point-blank save to deny Luis Suarez. But the veteran striker, his nation's all-time leading scorer, got another opportunity from close range in the 92nd minute and capitalized to send the match to penalties. He also converted from 12 yards out as Uruguay claimed the win.

More to come.
