Luke Shaw has revealed he’s suffered ‘a small setback’ in what has been the ‘toughest period’ of his ongoing injury nightmare.

The Manchester United and England defender has made just three appearances off the bench this season, coming against Ipswich Town, Bodo/Glimt and Everton in his return to fitness.

However, he was absent from the Man United team’s travels down to London for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Arsenal, sparking speculation he was injured again.

He has since confirmed he will be absent in an emotional Instagram post.

He wrote on his Instagram story: “Hi guys, it’s hurting a lot having to write this as I really thought I had got through my recent struggles and was on a positive path going forward, but unfortunately I’ve had a small setback.

“I’ve been through a lot and had a lot of ups and downs but this has definitely been my toughest period.

“I’m absolutely devastated and it’s extremely tough to come to terms with reality at this moment in time.

“I understand there is gunna [sic] be people frustrated, angry, disappointed and I understand all that.

“There is no one feeling that more than me at this moment in time.

“But what I can promise is I will do everything I can to come back better soon to help this club achieve its ambitions this season.

“Thank you to everyone for the support. It really doesn’t go unnoticed and I really do appreciate it.”

According to the Manchester Evening News, Shaw is expected to be out for a few weeks and his injury is muscular. talkSPORT understands it’s a different injury to the calf strain that had kept him sidelined this season.

The 29-year-old missed the opening games of the Premier League season due to the calf injury sustained at the start of pre-season training.

He played at the end of England’s Euro 2024 campaign having arrived at camp returning to fitness.

Shaw also missed a large majority of last season due to various injuries.

He made just 15 appearances in all competitions in that campaign.

Since becoming the most expensive teenage in world football when he signed from Southampton in 2014 for £30,000, the left back has made 278 appearances for the club.

He’s won two League Cups, the FA Cup and the Europa League with the Red Devils too.
