Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted he would love to return to Manchester United as manager if the opportunity presented itself.

The Norwegian has been out of work for almost three years after being sacked by the Red Devils in November 2021.

During his time as United’s boss, Solskjaer managed 149 games, winning 78, drawing 33 and losing 38.

Solskjaer helped the club finish second, sixth and third in the table, while he came close to winning the Europa League in 2021, where the club lost on penalties to Villarreal in the final.

The 2021/22 season was the start of his downfall, with a poor run of results from September including a 5-0 loss to rivals Liverpool and eventual 4-1 defeat at Watford leading to his exit in November 2021.

Replaced by Michael Carrick and then Ralf Rangnick who took interim charge, Solskjaer was eventually replaced by the permanent appointment of Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2022.

Ten Hag has been no stranger to criticism despite winning both the League Cup and FA Cup during his time at the Theatre of Dreams.

But asked at Oslo Business Forum in front of a crowd of around 3,000 people if he’d consider a return to Old Trafford if the opportunity arose, Solskjaer practically bit the interviewer’s hand off.

Quoted by Norwegian outlet NRK, Solskjaer said: “If the family [United] asks, I would say yes every day of the week.

“It feels wrong to talk about jobs that other people have now, but I would say yes, of course.”

Solskjaer was also quizzed on the prospect of taking the role of head coach of Norway’s national team.

Current boss Stale Solbakken revealed that he’d be stepping down after the 2026 World Cup campaign, leading Solskjaer to suggest that he’d be interesting in discussing the role.

It comes as pressure builds on Erik ten Hag

He remarked: “I am a proud Norwegian, and of course if the question arises, when Stale decides to give up, I will happily engage in discussions.

“I am a proud Norwegian and proud of where I come from.”

The former Cardiff and Molde boss added: “It just has to be the right job and I depend on working with the right people.

“While I’m still young and virile, I want to do something else too.

“I’ve said no to a number of club jobs that really tempted me, but I’m determined to make one last attempt here, and then I think that’s it.”
