Tottenham told they could be title contenders with one signing this summer

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes Tottenham could be title contenders with Ivan Toney up front.

Brentford striker Toney is out of contract next summer and a number of Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for the England international.

Although talkSPORT understands he could run his current deal down and leave for free next summer, with Saudi clubs also interested.

It is understood MacAnthony included a 30 per cent sell-on clause in the deal which sent Toney to Brentford – and Peterborough would be set for a huge windfall if the Bees sell this summer.

The Posh chief believes the 28-year-old would be a perfect fit at Spurs.

MacAnthony told talkSPORT: “The way Ange [Postecoglou] plays… if you could get rid of Richarlison, who is a one-goal-in-five striker, and put Toney into an Ange team, I think they would have finished top three comfortably last year.

“It’s not because of the sell-on, people always accuse me of this. I’ve said this before. I think Toney would’ve won Arsenal the title last year.

“I think he makes Chelsea a completely different team, with all these young players having a figure-head, international, top No.9 up front.

“And I think he makes an Ange team top three, potentially competing for the title in the last month of the season.”

Spurs are still on the lookout for a new striker following Harry Kane's switch to Bayern Munich last summer.

Postecoglou’s men were forced to share the goals last season with skipper Heung-min Son top scoring for the north London side with 17 league goals.

An out-of-sorts Richarlison chipped in with 12, while Dejan Kulusevski netted eight times.

It was enough for Spurs to book their place in the Europa League but Postecoglou will be expected to kick on next season in the race for Champions League qualification and the quest to land an ever-elusive trophy for the first time since 2008.

Toney has hinted that he is ready for a new challenge and his exploits with England this summer has further whetted his appetite for more games at the top level.

The Brentford striker is yet to try his hand in Europe and with just 12 months remaining on his current deal, the Bees could be forced to cash in on their striker to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.
