When does the January transfer window close? Premier League clubs in race against time to strengthen squads

It’s 2025, which means the January transfer window is open, but the clock is already ticking as teams look to strengthen their squads.
The Premier League is now halfway through the 2024/25 season, which means the table is starting to take shape, and clubs all over the division will be looking for a mid-winter boost.
The race for Europe is wide open, while there are also several teams embroiled in a relegation dogfight, and the search for reinforcements is on.
January isn’t traditionally a busy time for top-flight sides, but with this season so close, an extra player could be the difference between success and failure.
Premier League sides are also set to benefit from the fact the winter transfer window is a bit longer than it has been in the past.
When does the January transfer window close?
The January transfer window will shut on Monday, February 3 at 11pm UK time.
However, it varies across Europe, with Italian clubs only able to sign players until 7pm on Saturday, February 1.
Meanwhile, the window slams shut in Turkey on Tuesday, February 11, while in Saudi Arabia, it’s Thursday, January 30.
German, French and Spanish clubs can all still sign players until February 3, though the times vary.
This is also the same for the Championship and other EFL sides.
Of course, Premier League teams also need to worry about players whose contracts are about to expire.
Players who have fewer than six months left on their deals can negotiate contracts with overseas clubs.
Liverpool are one team who will have to be particularly wary, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah all in the same position.
talkSPORT understands that Alexander-Arnold isn’t currently thinking about that, but several other players across the league are in similar situations.
Of course, despite clubs having over a month to sign players, many signings are often left until the last minute.
Last year saw Adam Wharton swap Blackburn Rovers for Crystal Palace in a deal worth £22million.
Aston Villa also signed Morgan Rogers for an initial £8m, which has turned out to be an absolute bargain.
So, expect Premier League teams to be active right until the window slams shut.
The January 2024 window was relatively quiet, but with Manchester City struggling so badly, expect to see them dip into the market, while Manchester United need to help Ruben Amorim.
