Harry Redknapp shrugged off ‘Spursy’ jibes and backed Tottenham to win a trophy this season. The north London side suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Tuesday night, a significant setback in their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the competition. With Tottenham failing to win a trophy since their League Cup victory in 2008, Redknapp insists that the label, which stretches back some years, is unfair in different times. Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, the former Tottenham manager said: “It’s different teams, different managers and different players. How can you label a team when they got beat 15 years ago by somebody? It was different people. “There’s only a couple of trophies that you can win and they’ve not been good enough to win any of them, but they did get to a Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino. “You can’t label a football club. It’s different players, different eras and different people. “They don’t put the shirt on and think ‘we’re Spurs so we’re going to be a soft touch for somebody’. It’s just not the way that it works.” Most read in Football revelations Castillo to attend FIFA hearing with Ecuador place in Qatar under threat ambitious Chelsea owner Boehly pitches idea for Premier League North vs South All-Star game opinion 'Oh, great' - Klopp gives sarcastic response to Boehly's All-Star Prem game idea LIVE Liverpool 2 Ajax 1 LIVE: Salah ends UCL goal drought before Matip grabs winner BAD NIGHT Lewandowski has night to forget as Bayern have last laugh with victory over Barca reaction Liverpool fans observe period of silence for the Queen ahead of Ajax clash Redknapp managed Tottenham between 2008 and 2012, guiding them into their first Champions League campaign in 2010 In losing in Lisbon, Tottenham recorded an unwanted feat in that they became the first British club to lose during the reign of Charles III.
