ASEC Mimosas advance, Stellies suffer' big defeat
Today at 04:02 AM
As expected, the CAF Confederations Cup group stage ended on a high note this weekend as the likes of ASEC Mimosas and RSB Berkane recorded big wins during matchday six.
Beginning in Tanzania, Simba needed a victory over Constantine to top Group A on Sunday and did just that with a convincing 2-0 result at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.
In a game where Simba produced over 20 shots at goal, including a large sum of 70% ball possession, second-half goals by Kibu Denis and Leonel Ateba were enough for the Tanzanian giants to leapfrog their opponents into pole position.
Elsewhere, Jaraaf went into their final Group C fixture in need of a single point to progress to the next phase of the tournament. However, the Senegalese outfit suffered a 2-0 loss against USM Alger at Stade du 5 Juliet on Sunday.
As a result of ASEC Mimosas' 4-0 victory against Orapa United in the adjacent tie, Jaraaf missed out on qualification while the Ivorian side moved into 2nd place in Group C.
Over in Morocco, Stellenbosch FC suffered an uncharacteristic 5-0 loss against RSB Berkane at Stade Municipal de Berkane on Sunday. Effectively a dead rubber match, Oussama Lamlaoui, Youssef Mehri, Paul Bassene (2) and Youssef Zghoudi all managed to get their names on the scoresheet in Berkane. Both teams managed to book their place in the crucial knockout stage of the competition before the first whistle was blown.
