CAF Champions League: Al Ahly & Pyramids target crucial wins in South Africa

Al Ahly and their Egyptian rivals, Pyramids, will be looking to secure away wins in the first-leg of their CAF Champions League semi-final ties.

A mouthwatering tie between Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly headlines the semi-finals, with Masandawana set to host the defending champions at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon.

Sundowns booked their place in the quarter-finals after edging out Tunisian heavyweights Esperance de Tunis, while Al Ahly brushed aside Al Hilal Omdurman of Sudan in their last-eight tie.

In Head-to-Head stats, Sundowns and Al Ahly have met 16 times. It is a stalemate as both teams have registered five wins each, while six matches ended in a draw.

Orlando Pirates, on the other hand, are scheduled to play host to Pyramids, at the iconic FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday evening, in what will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides.

The Buccaneers, who overcame Algeria’s MC Alger in the quarter-finals, are the only unbeaten side remaining in this season’s tournament, having registered four draws and eight wins.

The 1995 Champions League winners will be up against Pyramids side that outclassed AS FAR Rabat of Morocco in the quarter-finals and they are making a debut appearance in the semi-finals.
