Four-way tie at the top of Egyptian Premier League

Some surprising results in the latest round of Egyptian Premier League action has resulted in a four-way tie at the top of the standings between Al Ahly, Pyramids FC, Al Masry and Al Ittihad.

Al Ahly dropped two points on Friday night following a 1-1 draw against Al Ittihad of Alexandria, who put on a solid defensive display to claim a point at El Salam Stadium.

The Red Eagles were leading until the last five minutes of the match, thanks to Amr El Soulia’s goal from the penalty spot.

However, a late strike from Van Derrick Bekalé Aubame earned Al Ittihad a well-deserved draw.

El Mahdy Soliman, Al Ittihad’s goalkeeper, delivered a Man of the Match performance, saving a penalty in the first half and making several crucial stops to help his team secure a point and maintain their unbeaten run in the league.

“We created many chances but we lacked quality inside the box. We were better in the second half but it was not enough to win the match,” said Ahly manager Marcel Koller.

By the end of Friday, Al Ahly, Al Ittihad of Alexandria were atop of the table with seven points alongside Pyramids, who defeated National Bank 3-1.

On Saturday, Zamalek missed a golden opportunity to go clear at the top, suffering their first defeat of the season with a 1-0 loss to Al Masry in Alexandria.

Mohamed El Shamy scored the winning goal in the last minute of the first half after a defensive error, sending his team level with the leading trio.

“We didn’t have a strong start to the game. We made many mistakes and we deserved to lose the match," lamented Zamalek manager Jose Gomez.

Next week will feature a tough battle between Pyramids and Al Masry, while Al Ahly and Al Ittihad face relatively easier clashes against National Bank and El Gaish.

On the other hand, Zamalek will travel to El Mahalla to face Ghazl El Mahalla, who are in good spirits after achieving their first win in the league against El Gouna on Saturday.
