The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will open with hosts Morocco facing Comoros in the first match, while reigning champions Ivory Coast have been placed alongside fellow heavyweights Cameroon, after the group stage draw for the tournament was held in Rabat on Monday evening.
Morocco, who made history as the first African side to reach the World Cup semifinals in 2022 and will host the continental tournament for the first time since 1988, were automatically assigned to Group A as the top-seed, and then joined by Comoros, Zambia and Mali.
Ivory Coast, who won the tournament in dramatic style on home soil a year ago, were drawn in Group F alongside five-time champions Cameroon, as well as Gabon and Mozambique.
Group B features two former champions in the shape of Egypt and South Africa, as well as Angola and Zimbabwe, while Group C sees the Super Eagles of Nigeria pooled with Tunisia and the east African pair of Uganda and Tanzania.
In Group D, Senegal will face the challenge of taking on DR Congo, Benin and Botswana (who return to the tournament for the first time since their debut in 2012), and Group E is made up of Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea and the hosts of the first-ever Nations Cup way back in 1957, Sudan.
The 2025 AFCON will get underway on 21 December 2025 with Morocco v Comoros and conclude with the final in Rabat on 18 January 2026.
