Morsy on verge of joining Salah and Elneny in the Premier League

Sam Morsy is on the verge of joining fellow Egyptians Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Elneny in the Premier League, as his club, Ipswich Town, close in on automatic promotion from the EFL Championship.

The Tractor Boys, for whom Morsy is club captain, have enjoyed an outstanding campaign and are just one point away from a return to the elite level for the first time since 2001-02.

They are three points clear of third-placed Leeds United and need only a draw at home against Huddersfield Town on Saturday in their final league match to secure promotion.

Morsy’s side would join Watford, Norwich City and Southampton as the only four teams to achieve back-to-back promotions (from League One and then the Championship in successive seasons) in the Premier League era.

“It's great that we've been so competitive at such a tough level. We’ve enjoyed this season and we enjoy being together. We’re going to fight to the death for each other," said the Egyptian, who was named the Supporters’ Player of the Year in April.

Morsy, 32, has spent his entire career in the lower divisions of English football, representing Port Vale, Chesterfield, Wigan Athletic, Barnsley and Middlesbrough, before joining Ipswich in 2021.

The Egyptian midfielder has played a massive role in his team’s exceptional campaign this season, as he has featured in all 41 games in the league thus far, recording three goals and five assists.

Morsy represented Egypt in nine matches in Hector Cuper’s era and was named in Egypt’s 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, featuring in their opening game in the tournament against Uruguay.
