Red Eagles swoop for Bencharki

Al Ahly have lured Achraf Bencharki back to Egypt after confirming his arrival on a free transfer from Qatar Stars League side Al-Rayyan on Thursday.

The Morocco international terminated his contract with the Lions in order to join the Red Eagles, bringing an end to his 17-month stay at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

Bencharki previously enjoyed a successful three-year spell at Zamalek from 2019 to 2022, which saw him win two Egyptian Premier League titles and two Egypt Cups.

The 30-year-old winger was required to pay half the amount of his contract – valued at $750,000 – to facilitate his transfer to the African champions, but was reportedly assured by Al Ahly president Mahmoud El-Khatib that they would cover the release clause.

Bencharki’s signing was announced with much fanfare on the club’s social media platforms, with the Maghreb Fez youth product declaring: “Cairo has one color… Africa has one champion… Achraf Bencharki joins the Club of the Century.”

He will provide a welcome boost to Marcel Koller’s team at a crucial stage in the season as they look to retain the Egyptian Premier League and CAF Champions League trophies before taking part in the Club World Cup.
