Stellenbosch determined to make history

Only a complete meltdown will deny RS Berkane a second consecutive CAF Confederation Cup final appearance and debutants Stellenbosch will be looking to join them.

Stellenbosch will be hoping to keep the fairytale alive when they host Simba in the second leg of their semi-final tie at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday, April 27.

The Maroons, who are featuring in the competition for the first time in their history, caused a major upset in the quarter-finals when they eliminated defending champions Zamalek 1-0 on aggregate.

Steve Barker’s side have some work to do though, after losing 1-0 in the first leg in Zanzibar on April 20. However, their ‘home’ form is good, having only lost one of their six matches in South Africa and failing to score just once.

The Msimbazi Reds needed penalties to overcome Al Masry in the last eight after the tie finished 2-2 on aggregate, with both teams winning 2-0 on home soil.

In the evening kick-off, CS Constantine have a mountain to climb as they attempt to overturn a 4-0 deficit against RS Berkane at the Chahid Hamlaoui Stadium in Constantine.

CSC are unbeaten at home in the CAF Confederation Cup this season and have goals in them after scoring in every game, with 4-0 being their biggest win against Bravos do Maquis in the group stages.

But they need five unanswered goals against the Orange Boys to reach their first-ever final and it will be a tall order given that the two-time champions have yet to lose on their travels in Africa, scoring in all but one of their five outings.

Mouin Chaabani’s side beat ASEC Mimosas 1-0 both home and away in the previous round, while CS Constantine had to navigate the shootout lottery to come out on top against USM Alger following a 2-2 draw on aggregate.

Sunday’s semi-final second-leg fixtures:
