Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton.

Ramsdale left Arsenal last summer in the pursuit of regular game-time, joining fellow Premier League club Southampton in a deal worth £25m.

The England international has indeed got regular minutes at St Mary’s, though Southampton’s dismal form has surely made him question the transfer.

Ramsdale was hoping to help Southampton avoid relegation back to the Championship when he arrived at the club but that has failed to materialise, with the south coast side picking up an embarrassing nine points from 29 games.

The Saints, who have conceded a whopping 70 goals, could yet record the lowest-ever points tally by a Premier League club.

Ramsdale signed a four-year deal when he joined Southampton last August but The Sun say the club still expect him to leave in the summer.

The 26-year-old is still rated highly despite Southampton’s shocking form and needs to be playing in the top-flight to challenge Jordan Pickford for a place in the England team.

Ramsdale’s imminent departure could be welcome news to Chelsea, who have been tentatively linked with a move in recent weeks.

Goalkeeper has been a problem position for the Blues, with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen both making a number of high-profile mistakes this season.

The likes of Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville and John Obi Mikel have urged Chelsea to sign a new goalkeeper, and some pundits have named Ramsdale as an ideal target.

‘I still think Aaron Ramsdale is an outstanding goalkeeper. I stand by that,’ former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop said on ESPN.

‘Chelsea could do with Ramsdale. Chelsea have about eight goalkeepers on their books and still can't figure out who's the best. It's ridiculous.

‘But right now Aaron Ramsdale would be the best of the lot. It's not his fault what's happening at Southampton. He's a really good goalkeeper.’

Ex-Chelsea defender Jason Cundy added on talkSPORT: ‘The goalkeeper has turned out to be a massive problem for Chelsea.

‘Jorgensen dropped an absolute dolly against Aston Villa. We did enough to get a point there and the keeper made a howler, it was devastating for Chelsea.

‘I would definitely have Ramsdale. That's an improvement. Kelleher at Liverpool is another one they're looking at.

‘Clearly the goalkeeper situation has been a bit of a disaster. Sanchez got the gloves and over the last three months it's been quite obvious that he's suffering. There's been a lot of goals and mistakes.

‘I think they will be looking to replace Sanchez unless they think [Djordje] Petrovic who is out on loan is good enough. But clearly it's been an issue all season and something has to change.’

While Chelsea could make a move for Ramsdale, the ex-Arsenal star has also been linked with Carabao Cup winners Newcastle United.

Ramsdale was one of four goalkeepers named in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad earlier in the month.

He was left out of Tuchel’s first game in charge, a 2-0 win over Albania on Friday night, but could feature on the bench on Monday for the World Cup qualifier against Latvia.
