Renee Slegers reacts to 3-1 victory over Everton

Arsenal were 3-1 winners away at Everton in the WSL on Friday evening. Alessia Russo have the Gunners a first half lead before Toni Payne's equaliser. A Maren Mjelde own goal and another Russo goal gave Arsenal the points in the second half. Renee Slegers spoke to the press post match, the first two questions are from Arseblog News.
On her overall impression of the performance…
Everton does things so differently from game to game, they can also make changes in game so they change formation today a couple of times in the game. So against Everton is just really, really important to problem solve and I think we did a lot of those things in the first half, especially from a pressing perspective. I think we are set up right, the spaces we were finding were right in the first half. We just needed to play in a little bit higher tempo and and bring the intent, a little bit more and believe that these spaces and these positions are good for us and we’ll score from it. We did that better in the second half, but then also we get in different qualities with the changes we make and those qualities fitted well today.
On all of the goals coming from Arsenal's right channel…
To be honest, I wasn't expecting them to give us so much space, especially in their back five. It’s a space we want attack and use and so it was it was bigger but yeah, we also did something differently today, which hopefully helped opening up that space a little bit more. We always look at our opponents and what area we want to cross from and cross to. I think especially the first goal today we score with Alessia's was a perfect one, so really happy with that one and all the others as well. I think the chances we create in the second half there was a couple of situations from the right side from Beth to Stina. I am very happy because we play those players to their strengths and that’s why we wanted them on the pitch and they execute really well and I think they play each other to their strengths. But also the players already on the pitch, they start playing to their strengths as well, it was a very good team performance, they understand each each other really well and very happy with the performance and result.
On Daphne van Domselaar's concussion and Emily Fox going off…
Daphne, we don’t have a time scale, she’s still being medically assessed. So we’ll see how that progresses in the next couple of days. Emily Fox should be fine. She got stamped on I’ll have to check, but nothing major, so we had one more substitution to do, so we just decided to take her off.
On Lina Hurtig coming on at right-back…
Lina has been training right back this week because all the other players have been training in their positions and at the moment we don’t have a natural backup on the right back position. So Lina has been training there and she actually did well, so we felt like she was most suited right now because she had been training in a position, she knew the tactical plan from right back and she always has the aerial qualities. She’s very fast and she can play a big role for us on set pieces.
On Kim Little's performance…
On their left side, our right side space opened up and I think Kim recognised it really well how she could make those runs and also be progressive by dribbling into those spaces. So that was very good, so I’m very happy with her performance.
On the travelling fans…
Shout out to them because I think they create the atmosphere today, like they always do and they follow us everywhere, so we’re very grateful for the fans we have and we always want to deliver good football to them, so it’s worth it for them to invest time and money. That’s always a big driver for us.
On responding to the disappointment of last weekend…
Obviously not happy with the performance and result last Sunday and I’m very impressed by how the girls came back and responded again because I think we don’t want those performances and results, but if they happen then the best teams will come back and that’s what we spoke about and that’s what the what the girls do today, so I’m very happy with that.
On Chloe Kelly's impact since signing…
I’ve seen her as a footballer, watching the footage but getting to know her as a person as well and to see how she invests and applies herself in training every day as well, she brings a little extra edge. She’s a little bit feisty, she’s competitive, so it it brings our training program to to the next level as well.
