Arsenal have tightened their grip on a place for next season’s Champions League place, beating Liverpool 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium. With Chelsea to play Manchester City tomorrow, Arsenal are in second, 5 points off of Chelsea, 3 points ahead of Manchester United in third, and 7 points ahead of City. Two goals in a minute put Arsenal in a commanding position, before Mariona added a third shortly before half time. A second half own goal from Jasmine Matthews, her second on the night, rounded off the scoring.
Renée Slegers made 4 changes to Tuesday night’s team. Daphne van Domselaar returned in goal, while Caitlin Foord, Chloe Kelly, and Frida Maanum all started, with Beth Mead, Kyra Cooney-Cross, and Stina Blackstenius all dropping to the bench.
Arsenal started positively. After 3 minutes, Kelly picked up possession on the edge of the box. She drove to the right, and then shot just over.
Sharp play between Maanum and Kelly saw the latter play into Russo. With Matthews tight to Russo, she took a shot that hit the outside of the set netting, taking a nick on the way through.
Arsenal should’ve gone ahead on 22 minutes. Russo’s flick from McCabe’s throw in played Maanum in, but she hit the post with Laws beaten. Arsenal recycled possession, and McCabe’s cross found Maanum, who headed straight at Laws.
Arsenal took the lead on 28 minutes. Kelly’s in-swinging corner fell to Maanum, who flicked towards goal. Foord latched on, and her scuffed finish went into the corner. 1-0.
Straight from kickoff it was 2-0. Foord and Maanum won the ball off Foord. Russo played Little in, and her cutback was directed to Foord, but was diverted into the net by Jasmine Matthews. 2-0.
Maanum hit the post again on 39 minutes. Foord was sent away on the left by McCabe, and her cutback found Maanum at the edge of the box, whose first time shot beat Laws again but bounced off the upright.
On 42 minutes, Arsenal played short from a corner. McCabe went to Kelly, who passed to Little, who returned the ball back to McCabe. From an inside right position, her cross went to the far post, where Williamson headed into the wrong side of the side netting.
Mariona made it 3-0 on 44 minutes. Again, Arsenal’s pressure was too much for Liverpool, and Mariona regained a clearance in the box, controlled, and then curled a left footed shot into the far corner. 3-0.
Katie McCabe, booked in the closing stages of the first half, was substituted at half time, with Jenna Nighswonger replacing her.
Mead and Wälti replaced Fox and Little on 66 minutes, with Caitlin Foord going to right back.
Mead’s impact was instant. She collected Williamson’s pass over the top. She looked to cross for Russo, but her cross took a heavy touch off of Matthews, who put through her own goal again. 4-0.
With a favourable game state, Victoria Pelova was finally able to make her return from her ACL injury. She replaced Mariona Caldentey on 73 minutes.
Maanum attempted to head Nighswonger’s cross from the edge of the penalty area. She made good contact, but placed the header well wide of goal.
Kelly, receiving the ball on the left, beat Bernabé on the left to drive into the penalty box. She shimmied and shot, but Laws was behind her low shot.
Katie Reid came on for Leah Williamson in the 88th minute, as Arsenal made their final change.
