Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has provided a repeat of his lewd World Cup-winning antics – having his way with a replica of the Copa America trophy on Thursday night.

Argentina won their third World Cup after a penalty shoot-out victory over France in Qatar in 2022 with the Aston Villa goalkeeper taking centre stage during the jubilant post-match celebrations.

Having also been handed the Golden Glove award, Martinez lowered the trophy to his groin and thrust it toward the crowd. The former Arsenal shot stopper enjoyed himself in front of bemused-looking Qatari officials in one of the most memorable moments of the tournament.

It was a repeat of the same celebration he pulled out after Copa America success the previous year with Argentina retaining that South American title this summer.

Martinez resisted the urge to repeat the celebration after Argentina's win over Colombia in July – but saved it for Thursday night as his side paraded a replica of the trophy following their win over Chile.

Following the World Cup incident, Martinez later explained his wild celebration was a response to France supporters booing him.

‘I did it because the French booed me,’ he said. ‘Pride does not work with me.'

Thursday's game in Buenos Aires also saw Angel di Maria make his emotional farewell to supporters after retiring from international football following this summer's Copa success.

The former Benfica, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain star won 145 caps for his country and was honoured by his old teammates and supporters.

The 36-year-old, joined by his family, was thrown into the air by the Argentina squad as Lionel Messi paid a touching tribute to his old teammate via video screen.

Messi said: 'I hope you enjoy this evening a lot with your family and loved ones.

'We’ve said everything we needed to say.

'We shared so much, and who would have thought it would end this way? We’ll miss you a lot. See you soon.'
