Portsmouth have had midfielder Freddie Potts on loan from West Ham all season, and the 21-year-old has thoroughly impressed with Pompey.

Pompey might have had a bit of a hit and miss first year back in the Championship when it comes to their recruitment. However, for the most part Portsmouth can be happy with their work.

True success will ultimately be decided by the outcome of their survival fight, but there are several recruits they can view as successes. Among them is midfielder Freddie Potts, who has flourished on loan from West Ham.

After impressing in League One with Wycombe Wanderers last season, Potts has locked down a starting spot with Pompey and managed the step to the Championship with aplomb. Unfortunately though, it could be tough to bring him back to Fratton Park for another spell, despite John Mousinho expressing hope.

With that in mind, we put forward three defensive midfielders Portsmouth should consider as replacements…

Lamare Bogarde – Aston Villa

As someone who has previously played regularly as a centre-back and filled in at right-back, Aston Villa talent Lamare Bogarde is a versatile and defensively focused midfielder.

After spells on loan with Bristol Rovers, Bogarde has been called on in the Villa first-team for cover this season. He’s produced some solid displays but with players back from injury and more depth set to be added in the summer, the 20-year-old would benefit from minutes elsewhere.

Pompey could be a great place for him to find action as a loan replacement for Potts.

Hector Kyprianou – Peterborough United

Portsmouth might favour a permanent replacement for Potts, especially if they stay up. If that is the case, they should be among those tracking Peterborough United captain Hector Kyprianou.

The Cypriot midfielder seems likely to move on from the Posh this summer with his contract running out and a step up to the Championship could await.

Kyprianou caught the eye with a fine display and a stunning goal in the EFL Trophy Final last weekend. This season has been a tougher one for him but Pompey could do far worse than eyeing the 23-year-old, especially given his contract situation.

Who plays at Elland Road?

Toby Collyer – Manchester United

Last but not least is Toby Collyer, who would be another loan addition for Portsmouth.

The midfielder has found opportunities in this Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United first-team over the second half of the season but could benefit from a loan at Portsmouth where he can gain more minutes. The 21-year-old is a physical and versatile option in midfield but needs regular first-team football.

A loan seems a likely outcome for the England youth international and Pompey would be wise to consider him as an option.
