Sheffield Wednesday talent Joey Phuthi has joined Huddersfield Town on trial ahead of a potential move, as per The Star.

Sheffield Wednesday are preparing for a summer of change at both first-team and academy level. The senior ranks at SWFC need strengthening, while change regularly comes around in the youth setup ahead of new campaigns.

Trialists will be brought into the U21s and U18s groups over the final weeks of the campaign while youngsters get the chance to impress elsewhere upon confirmation of their Wednesday contract fates.

Among the players reportedly heading for the exit at Middlewood Road this summer is versatile youngster Joey Phuthi. The 20-year-old has impressed in the Owls academy but looks set to head elsewhere upon the end of his contract.

According to The Star though, it could be that he makes the short trip across Yorkshire from Sheffield Wednesday to Huddersfield Town.

They report that Phuthi played the second half of Huddersfield Town B’s Central League Cup to Mansfield Town U21s on Wednesday. It is added that the Terriers have had eyes on Phuthi ‘for some time’ and are considering a swoop as he prepares to move on from SWFC when the campaign finishes.

Another EFL opportunity?

Phuthi may have hoped to make his breakthrough with Sheffield Wednesday after working his way through their ranks. However, a fresh start likely awaits the one-time Zimbabwe international.

Huddersfield Town could be a good place for him to take his next steps. It seems the Terriers have had an interest in his abilities for a while now, so his impending release offers them a good chance to swoop in.

Should they do so, Phuthi will be out to prove he can make the grade in the EFL by breaking through with the Terriers. It could be that a role in their B team awaits, or they could offer him first-team opportunities out on loan.

A busy summer ahead for both

Busy summers lay ahead of both Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town.

As touched on before, SWFC need to bolster their senior ranks with some fresh faces. However, takeover speculation is also circulating, while a change in the dugout is not out of the question amid consistent rumours over the future of manager Danny Rohl.

As for Huddersfield, they will need to appoint a permanent boss to replace Jon Worthington, who is in charge until the end of the season. A new manager may well lead to a turnover in players too, with the next boss keen to make their mark in aim of improving next season.
