Cardiff City’s situation in the Championship is ‘looking bleak’, former player Jason Perry has said.

Cardiff City were beaten 1-0 at home to Stoke City in their last league outing. They are currently in the drop zone along with Plymouth Argyle and Luton Town.

The Bluebirds are sat in 22nd place in the table and are a point from safety behind Derby County. Omer Riza’s side have four fixtures left to play.

Ex-defender Perry has said, as per a report by BBC Sport:“He’s (Riza) got no support. I do feel he’s just left there and on his own so he’s just going to have to find a solution. He’s going to have to gather the supporters together, he’s going to have to gather the players together. What we do know is they need points on the board urgently. They’ve only got four games to do that but it is looking bleak.”

He added: “Just looking at the team, they’re lacking ideas. We see the constant change in formations, constant change in personnel and it looks as though Omer Riza is just searching for a formula, a team, a method to win and unfortunately for Cardiff City and their supporters he can’t find that solution.”

Cardiff City survival latest

Cardiff City are in for a tough test away at Sheffield United on Friday. The Blades have lost their last three on the spin to Oxford United, Millwall and Plymouth Argyle and will be desperate to win at Bramall Lane to get their push for promotion to the Premier League back on track.

Riza’s side will be low on confidence after their defeat against Stoke City. That was a damaging result for them and time is starting to run out.

The Bluebirds have won just once in their last eight matches and as Perry alluded to, Riza can’t seem to find the right formula at the moment. After their trip to South Yorkshire, they have matches coming up against Oxford United, West Brom and Norwich City.

What happens if Cardiff City go down to League One?

Relegation to League One would be a huge blow for Cardiff City and they may also have to wave to promotion hopefuls Wrexham on their way down. It would have big financial implications and they would have to cut their cloth accordingly by selling some players.

They would have a big decision to make regarding their managerial situation as well. Riza was handed the job earlier this term after Erol Bulut’s sacking.

The Bluebirds were in the top flight as recently as 2019. However, they are now staring down the barrel of third tier football for the first time since 2003.
