'Right in the mix' – Millwall vs Middlesbrough prediction: The72

10/04/2025 03:23
Middlesbrough head to South London to face Millwall in a clash between two Championship play-off contenders on Saturday afternoon.
Middlesbrough make the trip to The Den off the back of midweek defeat to automatic promotion chasers Leeds United. Boro have been in strong form of late but were narrowly beaten by Daniel Farke’s side.
Dan James opened the scoring early and in truth, Michael Carrick and co were lucky not to lose by more. Leeds saw two goals incorrectly ruled out for offside.
Boro will be out to get back to their impressive form against Millwall. A strong run of five wins in seven before the Tuesday night loss means they are 7th, two points off the play-offs.
Millwall meanwhile are hot on the tail of Middlesbrough and not giving up on their play-off hopes just yet.
Although their chances are slim, the Lions have a chance all the same. Their impressive midweek triumph over title hopefuls Sheffield United makes it four wins from the last six Championship games, reviving their top six bid.
Alex Neil and co defeated the Blades thanks to a first-half goal from striker Josh Coburn.
Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…
James Ray
“Few would have foreseen Millwall’s emergence as late play-off outsiders but having stayed within touching distance of the chasing pack, a couple of impressive wins while others have slipped up has put them right in the mix.
“There’s no hiding it’s still an uphill battle for the Lions, but coming up against a Middlesbrough side prone to dropping points, the hosts should be hopeful of a big win.
“I do think Boro turned a corner before that narrow Leeds United loss though, and I don’t think I see them being beaten again here.
“A win could make for a really exciting end to the season for the hosts, but I’ll say this ends level.”
Prediction: Millwall 1-1 Middlesbrough
Harry Mail
“Millwall are still in the race for the play-offs and could do with winning this one. They will be in confident mood after their win at Sheffield United.
“Not many saw the Lions going to Bramall Lane and getting the victory. Alex Neil has done an impressive job since taking over from Neil Harris.
“Middlesbrough will want to bounce back from their defeat to Leeds United. Boro remain in a strong position in their quest to finish in the top six.
“The pressure is on the visitors and The Den is not an easy place to go. I can see the hosts sneaking the three points in this one.”
Prediction: Millwall 1-0 Middlesbrough
