14/04/2025 05:37
Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has said Thomas Waddingham will ‘probably’ have a scan on his hamstring injury.
Portsmouth left the striker out of their squad against Derby County over the weekend. Pompey drew 2-2 with the Rams after two goals by Bristol City loan man Rob Atkinson.
Waddingham, 19, made the switch to Fratton Park in the January transfer window and penned a contract until June 2028. He has since made five appearances for the Hampshire outfit and has scored one goal against West Brom.
In this latest update regarding his condition, Mousinho has said on BBC Radio Solent (as per a report by The News): “He felt his hamstring the other night and that’s probably a consequence of the fact it was his first start in English football. We’ll see how that settles down and probably scan him on Monday.”
Portsmouth are positioned in 19th place in the Championship table with four fixtures left to play. They are four points above the drop zone.
Portsmouth injury latest regarding Thomas Waddingham
Portsmouth landed Waddingham in the January transfer window to boost their attacking ranks. He gives them something different to pick from up top.
He was linked with a couple of other teams before linking up with Pompey. As per Code Sports, QPR and Sheffield Wednesday were interested as well.
At the age of 20, Waddingham is one for the future for Mousinho’s side. He has a lot of potential and is someone who will get better down the line.
The Australia youth international, who has most recently represented his country at Under-23’s level, rose up through the academy ranks at Brisbane Roar.
He broke into the A-League side’s first-team in 2023 and went on to become a key player.
The Cairns-born man fired 15 goals in 40 matches in all competitions before he caught the eye of Portsmouth.
Waddingham made the decision to leave Down Under earlier this year and has spent the past few months adapting to life in England.
What next for Portsmouth?
As Mousinho alluded to, Waddingham missed out against Derby County due to injury and he will now have a scan to determine the extent of his injury.
It would be a blow for both the player and Portsmouth if he is sidelined. They don’t have too many games left to play now.
Next up is an away trip to Carrow Road on Friday to play Norwich City.
