Sunderland fans’ booing of Tommy Watson has been labelled as ‘brainless’ by ex-striker Marco Gabbiadini.

Sunderland will be expecting a number of their key players to draw attention from elsewhere in the summer transfer window. Numerous SAFC stars have bene linked with exits all season.

Academy talent Tommy Watson was the subject of significant Brighton interest in the winter but he ended up staying put, although it was widely expected that they would be back in for him after the season’s end.

However, eyebrows were raised when a deal was announced at the start of April. It has since seen SAFC fans call for Watson to be omitted from the squad for the rest of the season, questioning his commitment to the promotion cause.

Regis Le Bris has continued to select Watson, but the Sunderland prospect has come under fire from fans with a vocal minority booing him during games.

Former Black Cats striker Marco Gabbiadini has now voiced his views over the fans’ stick of young Watson, naming it as ‘brainless’. Speaking on BBC Radio Newcastle, the former Sunderland man said:

“It seems a little bit brainless to me. It’s modern football.

“We’ve got players, the top players in the country, who are coming to the end of their contracts and they’re still playing for their teams but talking about where they’re going to be next year and they might be leaving.

“You can’t do that to players. It’s just the business of football.

“He has agreed a deal in advance of the season finishing. The club are going to do well out of it. Hopefully in the future even better. He might even end up back here on loan in the summer.

“I’m glad that the majority of people did give him the support he deserves. You never know what might happen. He might have a fairy tale end to the season.”
