Marc Cucurella has established himself as a starter at Chelsea, with 25 starts in the Premier League so far this season.

The left-back joined the Blues in 2022, after spending a year at Brighton & Hove Albion. He was also a starter for the Seagulls, featuring 38 times under Graham Potter at The Amex.

Cucurella moved to Stamford Bridge in August 2022 and a month later, Chelsea replaced Thomas Tuchel with Potter.

Despite featuring regularly at Brighton, he wasn’t able to enjoy a similar role at Chelsea under Potter. El País have published an interview with the 26-year-old, where he explains why being dragged for manager meetings at Chelsea didn’t help him.

During his time at Barcelona, he spent the 2018/19 season on loan at SD Eibar. José Luis Mendilibar was then their manager and the fullback impressed under him. Cucurella was also trained by Spain manager Luis de la Fuente with Spain U21.

The defender was able to connect with both De la Fuente and Mendilibar even though he hardly spoke with them. El País then asked if there’s a manager he has talked to a lot.

“For me, the more you talk to the coach, the worse it is. If you don’t talk and things are going well, it means that he asks me for certain things, and I do what he asks me to do. And that’s it,” he said.

“But if the coach calls you to talk a lot, it means that something is not working.

“For example, when I was at Brighton, with Graham Potter, I played everything, and we never spoke. Then he came to Chelsea, I didn’t play at all and all the time he called me to talk.

“That’s when I realised that the less you talk to the manager, the better. If he calls you into his office and starts saying things to you, it’s a bad sign.”
