Eagles Looking To Build On Villa Point With Newcastle Visiting Selhurst

Oliver Glasner was rightly proud of the performance at Villa Park last weekend and will have breathed a sigh of relief with some returning faces. The time is now to build on that result and getting Palace out of the bottom three.

ONE TO WATCH

ANTHONY GORDON
FORMER CLUBS – Liverpool, Everton, Preston North End (loan)
The Newcastle winger is on the brink of earning double figures in England caps and recently scored his first senior goal for his country against the Republic of Ireland in the successful Nations League campaign.

KEY CLASH

JEAN-PHILIPPE MATETA v FABIAN SCHAR
The French striker caused all sorts of problems in this fixture last season, ending the game with a brace but on another could well have had a hat-trick. He will be up against the Swiss defender who has struggled for form for a side that has been struggling for injuries in the back line this season.

THE NUMBERS

Palace beat Newcastle 2-0 at Selhurst Park in April and could win successive league games against them for only the second time, and first since a run of three from 1971 to 1972.

Newcastle's solitary Premier League away victory against Palace in the past nine attempts was 2-0 on 27 November 2020 (D5, L3).

Palace's tally of 8 points is their lowest after 12 matches of a Premier League season since making a similar start in 2018-19.

This will be the first Premier League fixture Palace have played while in the bottom 2 of the table since December 2017, when they beat Watford 2-1.

The record of 1 league win in 12 attempts contrasts sharply with the 7 victories the Eagles recorded in 13 games under Oliver Glasner last season.

The Eagles' solitary victory in the past 15 league games without Eberechi Eze was by 3-0 at home to Burnley in February (D6, L8).

Palace have only scored 3 league goals at home this season, the worst record in the division, and have not scored or conceded more than 2 goals in a Premier League match this season.

Jean-Philippe Mateta has 14 goals in 13 Premier League home appearances under Glasner.

TEB PREDICTION

This will be another tight game as the visitors have been on a run which was ended rather unceremoniously on Monday night by West Ham. The Eagles have also been in good shape if you ignore the home defeat to Fulham, so that all adds up to an interesting match up. The Eagles need three points to hopefully get themselves out of the bottom three and this would be a very welcome opportunity to do so, We are backing them to do just that, but only by the narrowest of margins.

PREDICTED SCORE: 2-1 Palace
