Everton are in the picture to sign Panathinaikos’ Georgios Vagiannidis, according to O Jogo on Monday.
Sporting failed to sign a new right-back in the winter market and still want to improve the position in the summer window.
The newspaper mentions Everton when covering the Lions’ interest in the 23-year-old.
AS Monaco sent an official to Greece to watch the defender live against Olympiacos at the weekend. This was reported in Greece.
O Jogo relay that and then state Everton, Fiorentina and Ajax are also keeping an eye on the defender.
They point out Panathinaikos rejected an offer worth €6m plus €2m in bonuses recently. The Greece international has a €10m release clause, but the report states his club need €8m as a fixed fee to sell him.
Monday’s edition of A Bola also claims Sporting are focusing on Vagiannidis to strengthen their defence. A club official has already seen him in action against Olympiacos.
A Bola say a meeting is scheduled today between Panathinaikos and a Sporting emissary, and the parties may find an agreement.
The report adds the Greek club can lower the price from €10m to €8m. This opens a new window for Sporting, who have seen their €6m+€2m bonuses get rejected, to raise the fixed fee.
In this way, Sporting are looking to put Everton and other clubs aside in the transfer race. The Toffees have to act and step up quickly if they wish to acquire Vagiannidis’ signature.
