Hartlepool United drew 0-0 with Southend United for the third successive meeting between the two sides on Saturday. Manager Lennie Lawrence, who was celebrating his 77th birthday, felt it was "a point gained" even though Pools lost ground on some of the teams around them and the gap to the play-off places widened to four points. Adam Campbell spurned a gilt-edged chance to put the visitors in front midway through the first half while Southend's Josh Walker struck the inside of the post five minutes after the restart. Lawrence felt Pools just about shaded the contest and his side looked comfortable for large parts of the afternoon as they extended their unbeaten run to five National League matches.
