It's been a miserable 12 months at Manchester United to say the least.

The FA Cup win aside, the football has been drab, results have been poor and there's still this layer of toxicity coming from within the club.

Indeed, many players seem ready to throw their toys out of the pram at the first opportunity, and there aren't many members of the squad who seem to play with a smile on their face these days.

Kobbie Mainoo has been a rare beacon of hope during this time, but according to Emmanuel Petit, speaking on TalkSPORT, even he looks unhappy at the moment.

Indeed, Petit noted that Mainoo looks to be losing his happiness at the minute.

Kobbie Mainoo looks unhappy

Petit spoke about the 'fantastic' young midfielder.

"Are you a fan of Kobbie Mainoo?" Petit was asked.

"Yes, definitely. When I saw the game against Spurs he was out of the game you know and he was not very happy. He was one exception you know in the dressing room, but all of a sudden you know, I think he's losing his happiness," Petit said.

Something needs to change at Manchester United

The fact that Mainoo is looking unhappy is perhaps the biggest sign that something needs to change at Manchester United.

This is a 19-year-old kid who is playing first-team Premier League football for his boyhood club, he should be loving every single minute of it.

Manchester United have somehow managed to strip away that from Mainoo in recent weeks, and, as Petit says, he's not looking as happy as he once was.

That's quite simply down to performances and results, and United need to change something in order to improve their fortunes and their star players' morale.

How United change this trend is unclear, but the more questions are asked, the more pressure piles on Erik ten Hag and his future.
