Tottenham Hotspur have endured what has to be considered their worst season in over a decade.

Spurs are rooted in the bottom-half of the Premier League table, and they're out of both domestic cup competitions already.

However, all is not lost for Spurs just yet.

Indeed, Tottenham are still in the Europa League, and triumph in Europe will lead to Champions League qualification for Spurs and the first piece of silverware in almost 20 years.

Tottenham have been backed to win the Europa League, and according to James Maddison, speaking to Sky Sports, Ange Postecoglou has constantly been telling the squad that this season can still be special if they win a European trophy.

What Ange Postecoglou keeps telling the Tottenham squad

Maddison spoke about the message Postecoglou keeps sending to his players.

According to the midfielder, Postecoglou keeps telling the squad that this can be a special season if they win the Europa League.

Postecoglou is under pressure at Tottenham right now, but a Europa League win could well save his skin.

"The manager always speaks about how it can still be special for us if we win that (Europa League), and we’re in a good position to do that," Maddison said.

“Listen, we’ve got work to do in the second leg but we know we’re capable of that and we can turn it around, there’s no one in there doubting the fact that we can do that. But we have to go and do it, talk is one thing, we have to go and win the game and turn over the defeat of the first leg. You win that and you pick up a bit of momentum, you’re in the quarter-final and then it can still be a special season for us. That’s what we’re hoping for and that’s what we’re striving for.”

Tottenham's route to the Europa League final

Tottenham Hotspur are having a poor season, but there is reason to believe they could win the Europa League.

Indeed, Spurs' run to the Europa League final is smoother than one may expect, and they would likely be favourites for most of these ties.

Of course, before Spurs think about any of that, Tottenham need to get past AZ Alkmaar on Thursday evening after losing the first leg 1-0.

Glenn Hoddle reckons Tottenham will be happy with just a one goal deficit heading into the second leg against the Dutch side, but they do have an uphill task this week.

A Europa League win is the only thing Tottenham can salvage from what has been a true disaster of a season so far.
