Newcastle are set to miss out on a teenage sensation that they had been confident of signing this summer transfer window, according to a recent report.

The Tynesiders are evidently in the market for further reinforcements this summer as they look to bolster Eddie Howe’s ranks ahead of the fast-approaching season.

Having narrowly missed out on European football, it’s clear they’re only a couple of top-level additions away from bridging the gap.

Though, they’re set to miss out on a rumoured target.

Newcastle target Chris Rigg set to stay at Sunderland

TBR exclusively reported in May that Newcastle were confident of signing ‘amazing’ Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg this summer.

However, despite their efforts, Rigg is set to sign a new contract with the Championship outfit running until 2027.

The 17-year-old clearly feels he’s better off developing at The Black Cats for now before potentially making the step up to the Premier League.

A move to Newcastle in the future is certainly still a possibility when you consider his ties to the club.

Journalist hints at future Newcastle transfer

Newcastle journalist Joel Bland was asked back in April if the club would try to sign Rigg in the future and he hinted that it was a real possibility due to a lot of his family being supporters.

“Most his family are NUFC fans, so you’d think eventually in the future. But, personally, I think he’ll stay at Sunderland next season, both parties really happy with his development and exposure to the first team,” Bland replied on X.

For now, Newcastle will have to look elsewhere but it’s certainly very encouraging that they’re trying to sign a number of top-rated talents as part of their new recruitment strategy.
