James Maddison has been in sublime form for Tottenham Hotspur this season and was in the thick of the action when they beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford.

The elegant midfielder ran rings around his Manchester United counterparts and was one of the best players on the pitch for Ange Postecoglou’s side in what turned out to be a statement win away from home.

Maddison is playing some brilliant football after what turned out to be a difficult summer for him as Gareth Southgate left him out of the England squad for Euro 2024.

However, Gabriel Agbonlahor feels he can force his way back into the Three Lions’ set-up if he carries on playing like this for Tottenham.

Maddison didn’t get a goal or an assist against Manchester United but was central to everything Tottenham did on the night.

Agbonlahor named him in his Team of the Week and tipped him to represent England in the coming months after missing out on a spot for Euro 2024.

"I thought he was outstanding again and he has been all season,” said Agbonlahor on talkSPORT.

“He got a goal and an assist last week and should have got at least one assist this week. What I love about Maddison is that this is the Maddison Spurs want to see.

“Receiving the ball on the half turn, little touches and one-twos, always wants to play forward and make something happen.

“That's what we want to see from James Maddison and that's what we're starting to see. If he continues like this, he'll undoubtedly be back in the England squad. An amazing talent.”

What next for Maddison?

Since joining the club from Leicester City last summer for £40m, Maddison has shown flashes of his brilliance several times. but there is an argument to be made that a player of his quality can show a lot more consistency.

He has started the 2024-25 campaign in fine form for Tottenham and the coming weeks will determine whether or not he can carry on in the same vein.

Lee Carsley has already made some bold calls as England’s interim boss and if the 27-year-old continues to perform as he has at the start of the season, he’ll have no choice but to give Maddison a call-up in the coming months.
