'An awful decision': Alan Shearer fumes at Arsenal player after Leicester controversy

Arsenal survived a scare by scoring two stoppage-time goals to claim all three points against Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

Hours earlier, Manchester City dropped points at Newcastle United, so those at the Emirates would have been well aware of that result before kick-off.

So, when Arsenal were 2-0 up by half-time, then many would have felt that the three points were heading in one direction and one direction only.

But Leicester, who are yet to win a game since promotion to the Premier League, had other ideas and, in next to no time, James Justin had levelled the scores with a brace and the home fans were in shock.

All of a sudden, Arsenal weren’t in control and they were heading towards dropping crucial points, before being saved by two very late goals.

Last week, there were several dubious calls made when Manchester City and Arsenal shared the points, well, it’s fair to say that the same happened again for the London club.

Whether you felt that Mikel Arteta’s side were hard done by at the Etihad, or the other way around, the fact is that it made headlines.

And, when Arsenal and Leicester were level at 2-2, it could have been a different game had the on-field referee – Samuel Barrott – had the courage to make the right call.

One thing is for sure is that it annoyed Alan Shearer and he was sure to express his views because he felt that Riccardo Calafiori was lucky to stay on the pitch.

The legendary striker thinks, at 2-2 and when the Italian was on a yellow card, he should have been carded again for a foul on Facundo Buonanotte, who was booked instead.

There was a clear trip from the Arsenal defender, with Shearer labelling it an ‘awful decison’, as he told Premier League Productions (28/09/24 at 5:10 pm).

Should Riccardo Calafiori have been sent off against Leicester City?

"I think that's an awful decision," said Shearer. "You can clearly see Calafiori sticking his leg out. Deliberate trip, a yellow card it should have been absolutely.

"It's such an important point of the game. To rub salt into the wounds, Buonanotte gets a yellow card instead. Look, he sticks his leg out. It's a deliberate trip. All day that's a yellow card."

Arsenal and Liverpool win, Manchester City drop points

After the drama of recent weeks, it’s Liverpool who are sitting top of the Premier League table after six matches following their 2-1 win at Wolves.

Not many probably backed the Reds to challenge for the Premier League title because Arne Slot had just walked through the doors.

But his team is performing like Jurgen Klopp never left and it will be interesting to see if they can continue this as the months wear on.

Arsenal will still back themselves to win the title, especially after Rodri’s season-ending injury because surely that opens the door for Arteta to finally get over the line.
