Chelsea have made decisions on the immediate futures of loan stars Andrey Santos and Djordje Petrovic after one of the Blues’ top officials attended a Strasbourg match.

The goalkeeping position has been filled with uncertainty this season, with neither of Robert Sanchez or Filip Jorgensen establishing themselves as a reliable starter.

The Spaniard has made five errors leading to goals this season and Chelsea fans are keen to see Sanchez sold on in the summer.

Meanwhile central-midfield is arguably one of the more stable positions in the team, but with Enzo Fernandez garnering interest from Real Madrid, there may be an opening for his spot in the side come the summer.

Following a report from The Telegraph, Chelsea stance’s on Santos and Petrovic have been revealed.

Robert Sanchez has made some glaring mistakes for Chelsea this season.

Djordje Petrovic and Andrey Santos to be given first-team opportunities at Chelsea

Both Petrovic and Santos will be rewarded for their fine-form whilst on-loan in France with the opportunity to earn a first-team place in the summer.

Chelsea’s co-sporting director Laurence Stewart was in attendance to watch Strasbourg’s 4-2 victory over Lyon on Friday (28 March),

The Serbian goalkeeper looked good at the back-end of last season for the Blues, but Maresca deemed the shot-stopper to be the wrong profile of goalkeeper, favouring Sanchez and Jorgensen due to their ability with the ball at their feet, for his maiden season in West London.

Not only has Petrovic’s passing improved under Liam Rosenior, but he continues to be a wall behind the Strasbourg defence, keeping eight clean sheets and making no errors leading to goals.

Petrovic and Mike Penders, who will arrive at Chelsea this summer, are both expected to be a part of the Club World Cup squad to compete with the current crop of keepers Maresca has at his disposal.

With four goalkeepers set to compete for the starting role, the Blues are not expecting to sign a new first-team goalkeeper in the summer, but that could change if an irresistible opportunity presents itself.

Meanwhile, Santos, who scored in the win against Lyon, is also expected to be given a chance to impress at Stamford Bridge. The young Brazilian has been one of Ligue 1’s standout performers this season, scoring nine goals in 25 games from midfield.

Chelsea links to Strasbourg disrupted by Champions League qualification

Football Insider Verdict

BlueCo’s ownership of Strasbourg has proven to be an incredibly successful scenario for both Chelsea and the French club.

The team have provided the Blues with a place to deposit their young talents, with Santos and Petrovic both flourishing during their time in France.

However, both teams are now preparing for a pause to be put on the loan system that has been employed, thanks to Strasbourg’s success in Ligue 1.

If both teams qualify for the same European competition, both clubs will not be able to transfer players from one another, nor share the same scouting database.

This could prove troublesome for the Premier League club, BlueCo’s ownership of both sides allowed for them to have more say in the development of their young loanees.

Chelsea have already agreed to sign Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg, but other players like Mathis Amougou and Aaron Anselmino, who would have been beneficiaries of the links between the two clubs in previous seasons, will instead likely be moved to other European clubs, where the Blues will have less involvement in their development.

So the cost of the success on either side of the Channel may be significant disruption in the near future.
