Liverpool defender Andy Robertson had to “buy a ticket to get back in” after being completely caught out against PSV Eindhoven, according to Clinton Morrison.

The Reds had already secured their spot in the top eight of the Champions League, league stage, but still had aims of finishing top when they played the Eredivisie side (29 January).

PSV proved to be a fierce opponent for the below-strength Merseyside club, coming from behind twice to win 3-2.

Goals from Johan Bakayako, Ismael Saibari and Ricardo Pepi gave PSV all three points and guaranteed their place in the knockout round of Europe’s top competition.

Bakayoko’s goal was the one that caught Morrison’s attention, as a wonderful fake-shot from the Belgian caused both Robertson and Jarell Quansah to fall to the ground before the Newcastle transfer target slotted past Caoimhin Kelleher.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Special, the former Crystal Palace striker, Morrison, said (29 January, 8.35pm): “Yeah [there has been a goal] it’s for PSV though, it’s Bakayoko, what a goal this is by the way.

“It’s good play down the right-hand side and the ball comes into Bakayoko.

“Let me tell you something Jules [Warren], he’s chopped at least two Liverpool players, Andy Robertson and Quansah, they’ve had to buy a ticket to get back in.

“And he’s just whipped it into that bottom corner past Kelleher, it is a brilliant goal. He chops it, comes onto his right foot, they both go for it, he just whips it into that far corner, what a finish.”

Liverpool stalwart Andy Robertson requires replacing before he costs the Reds

Football Insider Verdict

Robertson deserves the utmost respect for what he has achieved in a red shirt, since his move from Hull City for just £10million [BBC Sport].

The Scottish international has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in his eight years at the club.

In that time, Robertson established himself as one half of the best fullback duo on the planet, alongside his teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Whilst Alexander-Arnold looks to be leaving of his own accord, with a rumoured move to Real Madrid in the summer, Robertson seems to be happy letting the club decide on his future.

Having signed a contract extension in 2021 [Sky Sports], to keep him at the club till 2026, it would be no surprise to see him stay at Liverpool next season, but the club needs to prepare for life after the former Dundee United man.

Robertson looks to have lost the quickness that made his marauding runs up the left flank such a joy to watch, and injury issues are limiting the amount of games he can feature in [The Guardian].

Fulham star Antonee Robinson has been touted as a potential Robertson replacement.

Liverpool have been linked with a number of left-backs as a result of Robertson’s struggles. Milos Kerkez of Bournemouth, and Antonee Robinson of Fulham are both incredibly similar players to the former Hull man, and would offer the athleticism that seems to be deserting Robertson.

In other news, Stefan Borson says the Liverpool have agreed big money deals in the January transfer window.
