'Ange Postecoglou dramatic return to Celtic on cards after Tottenham sack'

Ange Postecoglou could, and probably should, make a shock return to Celtic if he is to be sacked by Tottenham this summer.
Having won five out of six domestic trophies during his time at Parkhead, the Australian boss moved south and enjoyed an impressive first season in North London.
However, this year has been a testing one for the ex-Celtic boss with his side ravaged by injuries, and after 18 losses in 33 Premier League games, Spurs sit 16th in the league, only safe from a relegation battle due to extremely weak campaigns from the three promoted sides.
It now feels like a matter of time before Postecoglou is sacked by Tottenham even if he manages to win the Europa League, but with some interesting developments emerging at Celtic Park, a return to Scotland could easily be on the cards for the 59-year-old.
Brendan Rodgers unhappy with Celtic backing
Brendan Rodgers has been linked with a return to the Premier League, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed to Football Insider exclusively.
The Northern-Irish manager was left disappointed both last summer and in January with a lack of backing in the transfer market.
Rodgers wants to take Celtic to the next level and be as ambitious as possible in the Champions League, having narrowly lost to Bayern Munich in the first knockout round of this year’s tournament.
With the Tottenham job seemingly about to become vacant, the former Liverpool manager may have a hard time turning down the resources that could be on offer if the North London club come calling.
Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil both backed Rodgers to succeed at Spurs, whilst discussing the possibility of Jose Mourinho moving to Celtic.
Having left Leicester with his tail between his legs, the ex-Swansea boss has suitably repaired his reputation by dominating the Scottish Premiership and performing admirably in Europe.
With the Foxes’ latest relegation seemingly erasing memories of his failure in the Midlands, now seems like the perfect moment for Rodgers to make the move back to England.
Celtic could offer solace for Ange Postecoglou
Should the current Hoops boss make the same switch to North London to replace Postecoglou then it is his potential successor’s own path which makes a move back to the Scottish Premiership so inviting.
Speaking to SpinGenie, ex-Inter Milan and Fulham midfielder Giorgos Karagounis tipped Postecoglou for a return to Parkhead, saying: “One day I think we will see him back there.”
For as good as his first season was, the wheels have completely come off for the ex-Hoops boss in England, and it is clearly taking it’s toll.
The once good-natured and jovial Aussie has been embroiled in several quarrels with the infamously combative English media, and Postecoglou was accused of having a “persecution complex” by Simon Jordan.
Record at Celtic | Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Win percentage | Trophies |
Postecoglou | 113 | 83 | 12 | 18 | 73.45% | 5 |
Rodgers | 271 | 190 | 40 | 41 | 70.21% | 10 |
Having been nominated for FIFA World Coach of the Year during his time in Scotland, a return to Celtic would offer the current Tottenham boss an escape from the toxic environment he finds himself in.
Celtic fans may have concerns surrounding Spurs’ capitulation this year and whether Postecoglou can get his mojo back, but having seen Rodgers pick up where he left off from last time round, it may be a risk worth taking if they do in fact find themselves on the hunt for a new boss this summer.
The possibility of a revival at Rangers once their takeover by 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh is a potential risk, but doubts over Rodgers going back proved unfounded and his Celtic predecessor needs to rehabilitate his standing in similar fashion now after a bruising campaign with Spurs.
