Tottenham Hotspur have a host of players currently out on international duty, including Cristian Romero, who is representing Argentina in their World Cup qualification campaign.

The Tottenham defender, fresh from winning everything there is to win with the Albiceleste over the past three years, is now looking to get his nation to the North American World Cup in 2026.

Romero helped Argentina run out 3-0 winners over Chile at River Plate’s Estadio Mas Monumental in Buenos Aires on Thursday night, putting in a critically acclaimed display.

For instance, TYC Sport described Romero as a 'beast' and went on to indicate that he is up there with the best players in the world in his position.

"He's a beast,” they wrote. “He doesn't miss a single one. There's no better centre-back in the world than Cuti these days.”

After the game, the Tottenham ace and the rest of the Albiceleste contingent paid tribute to Angel Di Maria, who had announced his international retirement two months earlier.

The Benfica ace called time on his Argentina career in July after helping his nation win a second Copa America in a row.

Cristian Romero and Angel Di Maria exchange messages on Instagram

Romero took to Instagram after the game with several photos from the game and the aftermath, in which Di Maria received a heartfelt send-off.

The Tottenham star wrote, tagging Di Maria and the Argentina Football Association: “Thanks for all the love as always. How nice is all this, we’re going to miss you Fide (Di Maria), you are history.”

Di Maria responded in the comments: “Me too friend, stay safe and be well. Hahaha.”

What’s next for Romero?

Romero’s Argentina, top of the 10-nation CONMEBOL qualification table, play Colombia away on Tuesday 10 September.

The Albiceleste are currently on 18 points from seven games, while Uruguay are second on 13 points and Colombia are third on 12 points.

Romero will then be heading back to London, with Tottenham preparing to host Arsenal in the North London derby on Sunday 15 September.

Other Tottenham players currently on international duty include Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall, who was praised by Sweden’s head coach after their 3-1 win over Azerbaijan.
