Anthony Gordon Newcastle to Liverpool update emerges as 'Luis Diaz decision looms'

Liverpool are facing a decision over the future of Luis Diaz that could have an impact on Anthony Gordon at Newcastle United.
The former Everton winger enjoyed an excellent campaign with the Magpies last season, which saw him attract plenty of interest from elsewhere.
Liverpool made bids to sign Gordon from Newcastle in the 2024 summer transfer window, although ultimately no deal would materialise.
Now the chance of such interest being revisited either this summer or further down the line have become clearer.
Anthony Gordon could eventually replace Luis Diaz
Back in October, Gordon signed a new five-year contract at St James’ Park that will make it harder, and more expensive, for the likes of Liverpool to sign the winger in the near future.
According to an update from The Athletic, Newcastle have also improved their PSR position to a point where they are under much less pressure to sell the 24-year-old now.
It is also noted that with Cody Gakpo establishing himself as first choice on the left of the attack under Arne Slot, there is much less need for the Reds to sign Gordon in the summer.

Appearances | 34 |
Goals | 9 |
Assists | 7 |
Yellow Cards | 4 |
Red Cards | 1 |
However, there is growing speculation that Luis Diaz could soon be set to leave Liverpool, with the Colombian having endured a difficult season.
The Anfield outfit are therefore said to be in a position where they must decide whether to offer him a contract extension or let him move on, with two years remaining on his current contract.
If he was to leave, it is thought that would be the factor that could see Liverpool reconsider a move to sign Gordon as a replacement for the 28-year-old.
Newcastle United will not want to sell to Liverpool
Football Insider Verdict
Having just beaten Arne Slot’s side to win the League Cup and end their long wait for a trophy, those at St James’ Park will be focused on enjoying more regular success.
Indeed, plans are already emerging as Newcastle aim to sign three players to improve Eddie Howe’s squad in the summer transfer window.
Selling Gordon in spite of that though, would weaken the side and move in the opposite direction to what they are aiming for.
With a long contract at St James’ Park and the improving PSR situation, it is therefore hard to see Newcastle wanting to sell, especially when this move would boost a side they want to rival in the future.
Liverpool though will undoubtedly be tempted by a move for Gordon given they already know what he can do, and may feel Diaz needs to be replaced after such a limited recent impact.
As a result it may not be a surprise if the prospect of a move to Anfield for the Newcastle ace once again develops into something of a transfer saga in another year or two.
