Gabriel Magalhaes is an absolutely indispensable asset for Mikel Arteta at the back as he continues to marshal the Arsenal backline with aplomb.

The Brazilian has played virtually every game for the Gunners over the past two seasons and is hailed as one of the best central defenders in the Premier League.

Together with William Saliba – who is also up there with the very best in his position – Gabriel constitutes an integral part of Arsenal’s spine and is a key player for the present and the future.

And the 26-year-old has spoken glowingly as Arsenal prepare to take on Southampton at the Emirates Stadium before the international break.

Saliba has been described as a ‘Rolls-Royce’ for his calmness and quality on the ball. Gabriel feels the Frenchman is worthy of the tag as he lauded his centre-back partner as a player and a person.

"Everyone knows he's a top player and a good guy, and as a footballer, I think he's so calm and a lot of quality,” said Gabriel on Sky Sports Premier League’s YouTube channel.

“How everyone says, for me, is completely well-deserved – Rolls-Royce."

Saliba and Gabriel are expected to start at the back for Arsenal as they aim to finish on a high before the second international break of the season.

Arsenal must tie down Gabriel and Saliba for the long haul

While Gabriel has a contract until 2026 and Saliba, 2027, Arsenal need to be wary of the fact that the pair are among the best in the world in their positions.

Real Madrid are firm admirers of Saliba and have reportedly watched him on a number of occasions over the past two seasons.

Gabriel, on the other hand, is earning rave reviews for his performances and could emerge as a target for a lot of teams if he doesn’t put pen to paper on an extension.

Arsenal have one of the best central defensive partnerships in world football currently and must do everything it takes to retain the pair.
