Arsenal look set to adopt an expensive transfer tactic employed by Chelsea during their mega-money spending in recent windows after a David Ornstein update.

After the Blues were taken over by Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly, a transfer strategy was implemented to facilitate major signings.

They look to spend big in order to gain more favourable payment terms, often offering clubs above a player’s release clause to gain cooperation. This approach allows for more signings as the signing club have more ability to manoeuvre from an accounting perspective to fit within PSR rules.

Arsenal are now potentially set to utilise the same technique according to The Athletic journalist, enabling them to make multiple signings this summer despite the risks.

Arsenal want to copy the Chelsea tactic for big signings

Chelsea have staggered payments for most of their big-money signings, such as Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez, and Moises Caicedo. They’ve broken the British transfer record twice with the latter two signings [Sky Sports].

This approach has allowed them to sign multiple players during transfer windows, but it has also prompted the Premier League to impose a limit on amortisation [The Guardian].

Arsenal are seemingly also willing to stagger payments to sign Martin Zubimendi so they can focus on other signings, Ornstein told NBC Sports via X.

For fans, this is potentially encouraging news, as it suggests the club has a strategy in place to make big signings. Otherwise, they would have just paid the full release clause for Zubimendi up front and left his club out of it.

However, if done repeatedly, this method will likely lead to significant financial risks that their rivals are now suffering.

Chelsea have seen success but also downfalls with this move

There's no excuse for the Gunners not to sign a striker, and their summer priority remains Alexander Isak. His transfer would almost certainly demand a fee similar to recent big-money signings.

Whether indications that Mikel Arteta’s side are looking to follow the lead of Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital and company at Stamford Bridge in one respect also means they have seen the merits of the overall strategy remains to be seen.

One major issue in West London is a bloated squad, which results in some players not receiving sufficient game time. For instance, Renato Veiga is reportedly keen to leave due to a lack of opportunities.

Renato Veiga wants to leave Chelsea.

If Arteta’s side adopt a similar approach to fund multiple signings, it will carry considerable risks. A bloated squad can create tension among players, and some big signings are likely to struggle to adapt or perform immediately, leading to financial strain.

So Arsenal will have to ensure they have identified the correct recruits so make the extra outlay worthwhile.

In other news, Arsenal are set to step up their efforts to sign in this position before the transfer window ends.
