As Celtic and Aberdeen face into a top of the table clash, Barry Ferguson prattles on about trophies being 'non-negotiable' for the Ibrox side

You get the feeling panic is starting to lurk under the surface for those cheerleaders of an Ibrox persuasion.

Panic and desperation.

When your beloved club sits in third place in the table, there’s a funny sort of irony in stating that ‘they have to win trophies this season’.

Given their current state and position, Barry Ferguson surely realises that he’s not in a position to make such demands on behalf of his club?

Yet he was at it again late yesterday evening in an article in the Record.

They might have to win trophies, but stating it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

Brick by brick, Celtic have dismantled their supremacist beliefs and downright bullshit claims.

Since the current iteration crawled out of the grave of the previous iteration, everyone associated with that club has held the belief it is their divine right to dominate Scottish football.

And of course, to win trophies.

Simply because everyone at Ibrox has convinced themselves that they are the same club.

To convince yourself of something like that, you must also build that fabrication around a fabric of lies.

Like say, you are the “most successful club in the world”.

After winning three trophies.

This one is at the heart of today’s article, because this is the fabrication that is teetering on the edge of extinction in the coming weeks and months.

There are so many others I could focus on, but because this is the one they cling to so desperately, I’m starting to sense the panic in the likes of Ferguson’s comments of late.

Earlier, I alluded to the fact that Celtic have dismantled their beliefs brick by brick.

This belief, though, is the one that could bring the whole rotten façade crashing down.

Because what will become of the Ibrox side when they are no longer the “most successful club in the world”?

They cling so desperately to this accolade despite the fact most sane people know it’s complete bullshit.

Firstly, with a total of 128 trophies won, Al-Ahly of Egypt are resoundingly the most successful club in world football.

Secondly, despite the fact they claim otherwise, Celtic are now level with their supposed tally of 118 (115 to Rangers 1872 and 3 to them).

Some of them are desperately trying to claim they are on 119, but as that’s literally down to desperation, I’m not even going to entertain the reasoning behind it.

In fact, I shouldn’t be entertaining the fact that they’re even on 118.

Because it isn’t physically possible when you are a 12 year old club.

But it isn’t me who is making these claims.

What I can legitimately and categorically claim is that my club has won 118 trophies in it’s unbroken existence.

It’s not up for dispute, as it cannot be disputed.

This season, Celtic are in a very strong position to become the most successful team in Scotland.

To become the most successful club team in the world, well, we can only aspire to become that thereafter.

However, there is a new kid on the block who might have something to say about that.

His name is Jimmy Thelin.

Seven games into the current season, and just like Celtic, his side remains unbeaten, with a 100% record.

There is only goal difference separating us from them.

The media are not yet taking this resurgence at Pittodrie seriously, but they should be.

With the now dreaded international break under way for two weeks, the most exciting clash for a while in Scottish football awaits at the end of it.

Celtic take on an Aberdeen side brimming with confidence, and believe me, when you win all of your opening fixtures to date, that breeds serious confidence.

We should know.

Aberdeen will pose a far more serious challenge at Celtic Park on the 19th of October than the Ibrox side did at the start of September.

So, while Barry Ferguson says this:

They (Ibrox) have to win. I know Derek said he doesn’t fancy them to win anything and I totally get that and that is his opinion. But Rangers have to win trophies this season.

Maybe he and the SMSM should start paying some respect to one Jimmy Thelin?

Maybe Barry Ferguson should stop making assumptions and claims about trophies, and having to win them, when he isn’t in a position to do so at this moment in time?

Because right now, Aberdeen are in joint top position in the Scottish Premiership, five points ahead of the Ibrox side.

At this moment in time, they are in a stronger position to challenge for this season’s title than Philippe Clement’s side are.

They are also in a League Cup semi-final with us.

The 19th’s game will give us a clear gauge of what to expect in that game.

If they were to defeat us, then they would be favourites for that trophy, not the Ibrox side.

That’s a big if, though.

But the reality right now is that we cannot underestimate Aberdeen or Jimmy Thelin, they are joint top on merit, not by a fluke.

They are there because they deserve to be there.

Because nobody has managed to beat them.

Barry Ferguson and the SMSM would do well to start paying attention to that fact.

Instead of making demands about winning trophies.

I believe that all this commentary about winning trophies, which I might add, Ferguson is constantly harping on about, stems from total panic.

Ferguson, in his heart of hearts, knows the trophies won record has already been beaten by Celtic.

But he clings to the notion that the current entity has won 118 trophies, or 119 depending on who claims what, as right now, it’s all they’ve left to cling to.

Once that goes, they become what they’ve been running scared from for so long now, simply the second best.

Right now, even that particular claim is under threat.

Yet they continue to ignore the clear and present threat coming from Jimmy Thelin and his Aberdeen side.

Celtic will not ignore it.

In fact, we’ll take it very seriously.

On Saturday the 19th, in an hilarious turn of events, the Ibrox side will be hoping and praying we beat Aberdeen, just so they can close the gap on us.

Derek McInnes might have something to say about that the following day.

The way the Ibrox side have been playing of late, that could turn out to be a bit of banana skin.

Interesting times ahead.

I suppose the reality is the Ibrox side HAVE to win trophies if they are to keep up the pretence of the world’s most successful club.

But having to, and actually doing so, are two completely different things.

In reality, a new club winning three trophies in it’s first 12 years of existence is an outstanding achievement.

By the end of this season, that’s a reality they might just have to face up to.

I’d hate to be the guy having to take those “World’s most successful club” signs down.

That’ll really suck.

Well, as the old saying goes, the truth will set you free.

Not sure it’s a freedom Ibrox will embrace though…
