Tyrone Mings has only been able to play a bit-part role at Aston Villa in recent seasons, but is now set for his career to take a completely different path.

Mings is one of Villa’s longest-serving players and was a crucial cog in their promotion back to the Premier League in 2019 and re-establishment in the top flight, but he’s barely been seen of late.

An ACL injury on the opening day of the 2023–24 season ruled him out for the entirety of that campaign, and the 18-capped England defender has still only been able to make 16 appearances so far this term.

Mings‘ England debut coincided with Villa’s return to the Premier League five-and-a-half years ago, albeit the 32-year-old won the last of his 18 caps in 2023, with half of those caps coming in 2021.

However, Mings’ injury woes over the past two seasons haven’t necessarily seen the door slam shut on his international career, with the veteran centre-half now lined up for a unique new role.

Tyrone Mings to become Euro 2028 board member

Mings is set for an unconventional role in the England setup heading into the upcoming home European Championships in three years’ time, with the Villa veteran touted for a position among its organisers.

According to The Telegraph (23 March), FA chair Debbie Hewitt has earmarked Mings for a role on the board of directors for the tournament, which will take place across all five countries in the British Isles.

If named on the board, Mings will combine his playing duties at Villa Park with his role as part of the tournament organisation team, with his perspective as a top-level, international player seen as key.

Though Mings will be 35 by the time the tournament kicks off in 2028 – with Villa Park one of the 10 host stadiums – he’s still expected to be playing, with a view to staying in administration upon his retirement.

Tyrone Mings news shocks Aston Villa fans – ‘How random’

Mings’ rise alongside Aston Villa in the last six seasons has made him a firm favourite at Villa Park, and as a result, fans have reacted both surprise and sanctity to the news that he’ll be on the Euro 2028 board.

The 32-year-old’s lengthy spells on the sidelines across the past two years have already seen him take a more hands-on role off the pitch with the Villans, and this move is seen as a continuation of that path.
